25/10/2023 - "Healthy  vs Unhealthy food".

Today during my 4th grade science class, I brought a lesson plan on Healthy vs Unhealthy food. The students were asked to explain the differences between healthy and unhealthy food in their own words. They provided examples like tomatoes vs candy and the nutrients that the healthy food gives us. Throughout the presentation, I presented the various food vocabulary for each section and asked them to pronounce it with me. Then, we took a look at the food pyramid that they are already familiar with and reviewed the different levels of foods. Following that, we did some practice examples using liveworksheets.com to have the students categorize images of healthy and unhealthy foods. Lastly, I gave the directions for the pyramid worksheet activity that asked them to place the food item on the level it belongs to on the pyramid. Thanks Paqui for the pictures!!

Monday October 30th and Thursday November 2nd, 2023

This week I brought a special Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos presentation and activity. The students were introduced to how Halloween is celebrated in the United States with examples of pumpkin carving, trick or treating, Halloween school parties, and decorations, etc. The students enjoyed comparing how they celebrate Halloween here in Spain versus how it’s celebrated in the United States. We watched a video that gave the students more context and visuals. I then introduced Halloween vocabulary such as bat, pumpkin, witch, etc. I followed the vocabulary by a couple rounds of Halloween Bingo using those same words. Lastly, we ended with a cute Halloween coloring page which they enjoyed very much.

Onto the Dia de Los Muertos (DDLM) lesson plan; I was very excited to share this celebration with my students since my family originates from Mexico. It has been a dream of mine to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos in Mexico as it is a special and unique experience. When introducing Dia de Los Muertos, I referenced
a well-known Disney movie known as “Coco” that would provide them with context and prior knowledge. In “Coco” there is a young Mexican boy who enters the World of the Dead and meets past family members. There are so many great examples used in the movie, so I found a YouTube video that pointed out the different ways we honor our ancestors and celebrate Dia de Los Muertos. Followed by the “Coco” video, we watched how DDLM is really celebrated in Mexico on this day. I shared a personal anecdote of when my grandpa passed away and my family put his photo on the altar as well as his favorite foods and drinks as an ofrenda. We then moved onto practicing the vocabulary and its pronunciation. Lastly, we ended with a calavera coloring page.
